Phil Taylor (Richard Lewis) is an East coast doctor who has moved with his family to the Old West town of Prosperity in the 1860's. It's a rough and woolly existence in the frontier and these one time city folk are having a rough go. Once there, Phil finds out that life is not what it was like back East. He and his family decide to go back East and convince the entirety of the townsfolk of Prosperity to come with them. Led by the inept ex-cannibal wagon master Harlow (John Candy), they begin the backbreaking and danger-filled journey back East. Along the way, they must survive ambushes by an Indian chief (Russell Means), bandits, and the railroad magnates who don't want the bad publicity of settlers returning home.
