Charlie Gordon (Walter Matthau) needs money. His bookies and gambling debts have piled up until everyone seems to be after him. He comes up with a scheme to meet rich ladies in the hope of being able to scam them out of some of their wealth. He talks his conservative brother-in-law, Herb Sullivan (Jack Lemmon) into going with him on an all-expenses-paid luxury cruise where they’re sure to meet the ladies. Unfortunately, Charlie neglected to mention that they are going on the cruise as employees. Instead of having a lovely cabin above decks, they are given a tiny cubicle way down in the ship. And instead of enjoying a luxury vacation, Charlie signed them up to be dance hosts. Herb is understandably upset. He can’t dance. However, the ship has already sailed, and he’s stuck. Charlie sets his sights on the lovely Liz LaBreche (Dyan Cannon), who is staying in one of the huge luxury cabins with her mother, and starts to out to win her. Herb, on the other hand, meets a widow, Vivian (Gloria DeHaven), while dancing and is smitten. Many mishaps ensue until the men leave the ship in pursuit of their ladies.
