In his quest for a rent-controlled apartment in New York City, naive Joe poses as the son of a deceased tenant to obtain her lease. The rent is cheap, but what he doesn't know is that he shares the apartment with millions of other little six-legged tenants: cockroaches. And as if cockroaches weren't bad enough, these are singing, dancing cockroaches who do elaborate choreographed numbers whenever they feel like it. They have complete lives and societies of their own, and come to like Joe because he lives like a slob. Joe meets a girl he really likes named Lily, and the roaches ruin their relationship and get Joe upset, but in the end the roaches defend Joe and turn out to be the best friends a new Yorker could have.
